I agree that technically they can't stop it, but the vast majority of times it's done at games it's a function of the background noise they play with the drum beating, no? Stop that and you slowly bleed out the chant without having to really order anything.
I never liked the chop because I grew up primarily associating it with FSU, a team I despise. I thought the person in this article quoted as saying it's the most "disgusting thing in sports" was wildly exaggerating and felt that the Star was somewhat ridiculous in propping this Op-Ed.
But then I then did a little googling and read this which was modestly eye-opening in helping to understand the debate:

In the end, whatever. I don't do the chop because I think it's lame but knowing the history behind it makes me glad I never did it in the first place.
