I'm sorry to hear that, but I hope there is still some chance it's not malignancy. We lost both of our dogs over a 12 month span beginning of the summer of '17. They were the first dogs we had as a couple, and had them for several years before having kids, so we bonded with them deeply.
They're never around long enough.
If, in fact, you do have to put your friend down, I would encourage you to buy or make something to remember them by. The vet school gave us baked clay imprints of their paws, and I put those, along with personalized urns for their ashes and a holder for their leashes on a floating shelf, with their pictures and a quote about dogs above.
