The nice thing about the 3 year deal suggestion is it gives KC the ability to have a low first year cap hit, one year with an AAV cap hit then the option to drop the cap hit again by signing a new extension after the second year to finish his career in KC if he’s still being dominant. It protects the teams cap long term and it gives CJ another chance at a big payday in a couple years.
Same as Mathieu. His deal is for 3 years for the same reason.
So was Watkins.

well, yeah, except that a 3 year deal with a low first year cap hit means that his cap hit accelerates exactly when Mahomes' will start to. So that's a no-go.
Mathieu's deal was 3 years from last year. Watkins is now untenable as is. He's going to be cut, traded, or re-worked.
You can move stuff around a little, but the reality is you'll have $40 million per year plus in cap hits in HALF of your defensive line.
Now, maybe Veach has a way to make it work. I trust that mother****er. He got it done, and sometimes I didn't understand what the hell he was doing, but he's proven himself.
I doubt that's how it goes down. I think the best thing for the future health of the team is to trade Jones for a 1st and probably a 3rd and sign quality free agents to fill holes at linebacker, offensive line, and corner.
Sorry, just how I see it.
