It appears that it did. It is unlikely for a deadlier mutation to get a foothold, but not impossible.
One theory I read, and just a theory mind you, the Men of WWI were packed in the trenches like sardines.
Even though the disease was relatively deadly and could kill quickly, it could spread so quickly in the trenches the mutation didn't slow it down. This may have been the deadlier version that the returning war veterans spread all over the world.
