It's not new, but we have a real problem these days with how much media (and politics, frankly) requires sensationalism to survive. People go nuts over stories that confirm their biases on either end of the spectrum (OMG the world is ending! AND OMG we're destroying the economy!).
I constantly try and apply a filter of "is this pulling on my emotions" when reading this stuff. That means that I don't get excited about positive news, but I don't freak out about the negative either. It's not as exciting as going nuts every time there's something that freaks you out, but it helps to cut through the noise.
