Here is a CDC guideline covering some of what you listed before. Honestly it makes the mask sound like more of a risk than a benefit.

Used correctly it can help , the issue is the average person doesn't use it properly (treated as sterile) hence why the initial recommendation they would not be a benefit, but with the asymptomatic spread they figured if you can get more people to wear masks it will increase the chance affected people will have them reducing shedding into the environment.
