There's been a TON of research done in the past few months. We now know that surfaces are a pretty rare source of transmission when, in the beginning, people thought it was the primary way the virus was spread.
The original indications were that CV was only in large droplets that almost immediately dropped to the ground. Now we know that it can be spread in small droplets that can linger in the air for hours. It can even be moved around in air conditioning systems and still infect people.
In a world where it is transmitted primarily by surfaces, all you need to do is wash your hands. We now know that's not true. That's why masks are being recommended now while they weren't in the beginning.
