I thought the idea behind the flu vaccine was that, even though its only 40% effective, it will prevent people from getting serious/dangerous cases if they do get it.

I remember reading in the Moderna testing that none of their vaccination group who got covid had a serious case. I don't know if that's definitive proof, but it's promising.
