The act abolishing the kingship was an Act of the Rump Parliament that abolished the monarchy in England in the aftermath of the Second English Civil War. In the days following the execution of Charles I on 30 January 1649, Parliament debated the form that any future government should take.
Cromwell was sort of like our George Washington. Cromwell dissolved the Barebone’s Parliament and had himself declared Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England on the 16th of December 1653. He was basically acting as king in all but name. When Cromwell died guess who he named his successor? His son.
It went badly for Cromwell's son and soon enough the people of England wanting their monarch back. Charles the 2nd came back to England to claim the crown.
