My initial thought was that a mission would be aborted if the plane did not cross the bombing zone. This would mean that a mission would count if you either dropped your bombs over the target or you flew the whole outbound route as planned and couldn't drop your bombs due to bombardier injury, jammed doors, etc.

However, it seems like you should get credit if you go out and engage the enemy and get shot up, and have to return to base. Even if you didn't drop your bombs, you still faced combat.

Which definition seems most reasonable?
I have been going with the second thought. 0% bombing, but they might have shot down some planes, and received damage. That is still a mission.
