I'd be more willing to accept this line of reasoning if the defense wasn't running around confused before 1/2 the snaps.
I mean if Mathieu and Hitchens are these exceptional leaders of the defense and are instrumental in getting things set up correctly, why the hell is the defense never set up correctly?
And where's the turnover that would explain it? This starting defense has one new player on it from last season.
And no, I don't want to hear it's "Spags complicated scheme" after going through 3 years of bleating over "Bob Sutton's complicated scheme!" nonsense. At a point its pretty basic football shit that we're screwing up.
I think a pretty significant part of it is probably our reliance on sub packages. Teams run up-tempo when we're trying to sub 3 guys out and they get out there just in time to be in the wrong spot.
Sooner or later they need to get their base defense figured out and if that means treating heavy nickel as your base and getting more push from your down linemen, then that's what it means. But you can't just keep running around confused out there because your opponent isn't kind enough to give you 20 seconds to figure shit out.
