There’s such a thing as loyalty to your friends and family. Did anti-racism really need Andy to say, “Gruden is a piece of shit” in order to advance what they believe to be their cause? No? Then why should Andy do what everybody else is doing? The fact that he didn’t defend or even say, “I feel sorry for my friend” and instead just said, “No comment” should be good enough for anybody who’s not an SJW spazz.
What if this were a brother of his? Or his son? Let’s say his wife were involved with some kind of organization and had as much recognizability to the public as Gruden. Does Vag Gregorian expect him to throw his own wife under the bus to make a point that you shouldn’t use racey language even in private emails?
