And therein lies the challenge.
Buying a big engagement ring is not about showing your love. It's about being sure that your future wife doesn't lose status in her social circle, which I guess is a sign of love but not in the way that the commercials depict.
When my wife and I got engaged we were in economic decline. We were both losing our jobs and going back to grad school to retool, so her ring was nice but not extravagant at all. She wore it for 15 years or so, and then at that point we were doing pretty well and she was hanging out professionally with trust fund women, so I upgraded her to something more flashy one Christmas. Plus, I think jewelry perhaps has different meanings for many women than it does for men.
I like looking at jewelry from an artistic standpoint. I think gemstones are really overpriced, but then again my wife probably thinks that Chiefs tickets are overpriced.
