The story is based off of William Randolph Hearst as most know. I visited Hearst Castle a few years ago and I recommend it to anybody if you're on the Cali coast. It's in the middle of nowhere though. Four hour drive from SF or LA.

One of things I thought was really interesting about Hearst is that he spent like a drunken sailor on old antiques. He went to Europe after WWI and bought out estates or bombed out churches that had 300+ year old furniture/Art work etc. then had them shipped to California. He invited all kinds of famous people to his castle during the 20's and 30's. He even had a zoo with Polar Bears and other exotic animals. Must of been like a magical wonderland for people visiting in the early 20th century.
