And sometimes the locker room connection you think is a benefit is anything but that. It may help in some small way(s), but in the end a coach can't be a player's friend. And while I'm not suggesting that you're claiming that's what's going on, most people think "they can relate" is a kissing cousin to being their friend. And you don't need to have been where they are to give good advise for how they can become better players and people.

I don’t think any organization is specially excluding on race. That doesn’t mean they don’t make bad decisions when they rely way too much on a good ole boy network. Doesn’t mean they can’t do better to develop the talent they have. We have two nepotism hires on our own staff. Britt Reid (gone, but he also ended up screwing us) and Alex wittingham. The other coach’s son we had, Adam Zimmer, got a dui while on our staff. People think this is a top down issue (not hiring black coaches) but it could very well be a bottom up issue (not bringing enough black talent in the door).
Of course not all black players will thrive as coaches. But many do have the qualities you look for which can be groomed over time. That’s why you put them in your pipeline to see which ones sink or swim. If nfl teams aren’t pulling in a great pipeline of these players, regardless of race, then they’re not running their team very well.
