The other coach’s son we had, Adam Zimmer, got a dui while on our staff. People think this is a top down issue (not hiring black coaches) but it could very well be a bottom up issue (not bringing enough black talent in the door).

Of course not all black players will thrive as coaches. But many do have the qualities you look for which can be groomed over time. That’s why you put them in your pipeline to see which ones sink or swim. If nfl teams aren’t pulling in a great pipeline of these players, regardless of race, then they’re not running their team very well.
I respect everything you just said, but I'd caution you or any sport/business on using color, ever, as any sort of requirement for selecting an organization's high/highest coach or leader, or who gets in the pipeline. Instead I would offer to all young men and women who want to aspire to being a sports coach to work on life skills that lead being a great leader and also working tirelessly with an emphasis on the particular sport they dearly love.

From coaching robotics to coaching wrestling, to coaching football, it's never bad to have played/participated in those activities growing up, but what it takes to coach is a balance between organizational leadership skills, being a student of the game, having a dynamic mind, knowing player interaction is just part of the job (being good with time is really important too), and a tenacity for being able lead people who are stars are some of the things that make you a coach.

It takes a very special person to coach, and knowing the game from the player's side is just one facet of a very hard diamond.
