Chiefs really did not have a contract to offer him that would be satisfactory.
And three of those 5 deals are deals the team would probably like to have back. Another one is something of a legacy contract. About the only contract on that list that presents a true asset is Simmons.

And if Mathieu ends up on that list he’ll end up in ‘regret’ territory as well.

But there’s a non-zero chance that he’s overplayed his hand here and ends up closer to $12-13 million a year when the big money stops flying at the beginning.
