I'm not sure of a mechanism whereby a team 'retains' salary on NFL contracts.

Could exist, but I've never heard of it.

But ultimately the cap figure doesn't bother me as much as the fact that I'm just not sure he's very good anymore. He's never been terribly athletic; more of a physical CB even coming out of college (when I did like him - pretty sure I took him in the CP Mock).

Guys that are right on the border of NFL baseline athleticism don't slowly age out - they just hit a wall.

Last year looked like he may have done precisely that.

If I thought he could play at the same level as Ward last year, I wouldn't mind bringing him in at his figure (after the bonus money hits the Giants cap he'd be here at around $13 million that I'd imagine he'd be open to restructuring a tick).

I just don't think he can do that anymore. He feels more like that really shitty corner we signed away from Atlanta a few years back who got torched by the Colts in the comeback game (Robinson?).

He just seems washed.
