One thing that I don't think necessarily gets over looked but forgotten sometimes is Patrick pedigree. His father being a MLB player probably talked about players coming in and out of his life and moving from one ball club to another without real notice getting traded. That's why he wanted a long term contract a since of belonging and knowing he won't have the stress of negotiations and getting traded for a long time. He will be a Chief for life.
