Of course now that's, what I was saying. But in choosing to speak out about it publicly, he's also free to suffer the consequences of his words and beliefs... being criticized or labeled, losing sponsors, whatever.
My bigger point was just that it only required a small change in wording for him to reduce the target (and show respect for other views). That would help him avoid some of the backlash.
