How Star Wars' Obi-Wan Kenobi Series Honors Alec Guinness
By Math Erao
Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor explains how he's finally able to embody Alec Guinness' performance from Star Wars: A New Hope.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will move the character even closer to the version played by Alec Guinness in A New Hope, and star Ewan McGregor opened up about how he honored the late actor.
"It just always has to feel like him," McGregor told Total Film about honoring Guinness' version of Obi-Wan. "I have to hear him in my head when I'm reading the scripts. There would occasionally be a little Americanism that just didn’t feel right immediately. You'd Anglo-fy it slightly to make it feel like Alec."
In the past, McGregor said he felt like he was simply playing a younger version of the "wise, quiet, thoughtful" version of Obi-Wan who was currently "a soldier with a sword and flying spaceships." But now that the actor himself is older, he feels more able to embody the original version of the character. "Now I"m closer to Alec Guinness in age," he said. "I'm 50 now. I watched him again in a different way."
"Alec did these little eye rolls," McGregor continued about how he learned to align the two versions of the character for the upcoming show. "'Oh, he's not dead. It's me.' Every now and again, I tried to throw in a little eye roll. And things like, he would play with his beard. I did physically borrow some of the things he did, which I wouldn’t have done in the original films because I was too much younger. But I felt happy to be in the shoes again. I really felt like it was more interesting playing him because he's older."
Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, where the Jedi battled Anakin, his old apprentice. He won the fight but lost the war. And Anakin, now a fully-realized Darth Vader, will be hunting down his old master. The show will bridge the emotional gap between A New Hope and Revenge of the Sith, bringing both Obi-Wan and Anakin closer to the versions of the characters seen in the original film. And just like in both of those Star Wars movies, Obi-Wan and Anakin will duel and have to confront their pasts together.
Obi-Wan Kenobi premieres May 27 on Disney+.
