There's a little random feature in the game called a rabbit's foot, and if a plane picks one up they can re-roll the dice one time on a catastrophic event and hope for something better. Your mission happened to have a rabbit's foot, and it got used to prevent a nasty little hit (i.e., the engine) that was about to kill you and seriously injure gh4chiefs. That was the first rabbit's foot used in ten missions. You had Lady Luck flying wingman for you.
