It wouldn't be a $35 million cap hit.
They'd accelerate $19 million in signing bonus onto their cap. But only $5 of it would hit this year and that figure is already calculated into their cap hit for this season so it's no harm, no foul.
They'd take a $14 million dead money hit on NEXT season's cap but they'd cut a $20 million base salary from it. So they'd actually clear a little bit of cap space next season and in the process get some draft capital to rebuild (while further clearing their books for 2024 and beyond).
They'd consider trading him because that $20 million in guaranteed base salary next year is fairly onerous for a team looking at a really tough cap situation in the midst of a rebuild.
If someone steps to the plate with the compensation they're seeking, it'll get done. And I think a Brown level deal gets it there.
