High sodium diet can cause this as well. But usual suspects are tea and soda.
Ironically I encountered mine trying to get healthier. I had drank 2 of the 2 liter bottles of mountain dew per day for about 20 years. Decided to give it up and started drinking Gatorade and water.
During the rehydration and sort of re inflation of my kidneys, it dislodged a stone while I was at work.
I had gone to the restroom before the stabbing pain started, and I thought I was having a diabetic problem, because it looked like I was pissing pure sugar.
It turned out to be a sort of sand related to this, and when I went back into the truck to resume unloading, the constant twisting and turning finally dislodged the stone and it felt like a knife in my back being dragged and twisted.
I was pale, sweaty, couldn't get a good deep breath, and my boss who was so a good friend was asking me questions and I told him about pissing what looked Ike sugar earlier, and he told me it was a kidney stone and that I should go to the ER.
Well my no Insurance having ass didn't go, and I had to pass that ****er at home. Most painful 8 hours of my life.
