If the person behind had a legitimate chance, I think you have to split the money (while giving the leader the win). I lost my final before the Bills/Bengals game was even played, so I don't have to deal with this.

No I agree you definitely have to look at the situation too.
For example, I know of a league where the guy was winning by 1 going into the game playing against Burrow. Obviously the TD alone put his opponent in front by 5+, so he should get the W and the normal/standard split.
