McDermott is not a fool, that's for sure. He's a defensive coach and he saw his defense getting torched. He also saw 2 more defensive players leave the game in that first 9 minutes, which would have made the game even tougher on their defense the rest of the way.
Is it possible the Bengals slow down in a major way like they did recently against Patriots & Ravens? Yeah, it's possible. But it's also possible they keep their foot on the gas against an injured, struggling Buffalo defense and put 40-50 points on them.
Smart move by McDermott to avoid the possibility of a loss to the Bengals. It allowed Buffalo to at least keep home field advantage on the Bengals. They also dodged the road game with KC.
