Patrick is 27 years old next season with 6 seasons in the league, 5 as a starter and nearly 100 games played when you include the playoffs. He doesn't need a babysitter and probably gets little/no benefit from one at this point.
If that's the case (and I hope it is), I'd hope Giirardi is a guy we could use to actually develop a young backup. Then again, who's gonna be better at that sort of thing than Nagy and/or Reid at this point?

I don't think it's about babysitting anymore. It's about finding a guy who can truly hold the fort down. I was a fan of keeping Henne on the roster and I think it'd be good to bring in another veteran. Doesn't mean they can't develop someone, but we're a championship team and QB is the most important position.
Literally all 3 Super Bowls wouldn't have happened without the backup. Henne made huge drives both this year and in 2020 in the playoffs. And if Matt Moore doesn't beat a good Vikings team in 2019 we don't get a bye and have to go to New England and then maybe Baltimore. Now they could develop a young guy to that level, but whoever the backup is they need to be sure about him because it could tank a championship team if the backup QB isn't ready.
