Iowa's structure is pretty dependent on development. They bring in 3-star guys and coach them up. So more often than not, guys sit on the bench while they gain weight and learn the game. Iowa takes a lot of guys that play other positions in HS and move them around too.
So in the end, the upperclassmen get to play a lot more than the underclassmen. Van Ness simply wasn't accomplished enough to beat out the guys ahead of him. Iowa has had a pretty solid D-line rotation for a long time.
I love Van Ness as a prospect. I just don't see him as a top 20 guy. I think his initial rankings (mentioned in the article) are pretty much dead on. He's a guy that should go around pick 25.
