The league needs stars and James is a star. He's still a monumental douche and his stans are somehow worse.

But the league his better for having him in it. If he really is going to try to leverage a retirement ploy, this is one of those times that the league could do some wink/nod shit behind the scenes - not with owners but with agents - to try to push something through.

2 more years of James in the league is absolutely something Silver wants.
