It's $500K - asswipe money compared to the overall deal when you really get right down to it.
It's more symbolic than it is punitive. It's a very LOUD indicator that our patience is tapped.
Since we're evidently doing this in the media now, there's some risk of PR blowback. That said, Jones and his people pretty obviously rooting against the Chiefs at this point can't be engendering them many fans either.
Taking it off the table altogether is scorched earth an punitive. But in a tense negotiation where you're at stalemate, a bop on the nose with a number that doesn't really mean anything can sometimes shake some cobwebs loose IF the parties aren't really looking to go to showdown.
And if they are - well as you noted, a deal wasn't getting done anyway.
It's just another small effort to break something loose.
