I have always done the same thing, buy 2 or 3 pairs of shoes every year or so depending on wear and tear. Those used to be Nike's, didn't mind throwing down $80-$100 for the brand and always found the build quality to be good.

This last time I tried the Nike's and thought I could see what else was out there so I tried Brooks and HOKA. I actually liked the Brooks Ghost series alot, firm fit, padding was comfortable and the colors were good with a price tag around $120 at that time. HOKAs were around $140 at the time for the Clifton 9 version. HOKAs rocker sole threw me off at first, padding was overly generous but walking around in them felt good and my wife and other friends and family had pairs so I got the HOKAs. I'm sure I would've been happy and saved money with the Nikes or Brooks, I can't tell you if it's had a good affect on my stride, feet, knees, etc by walking in them but they're good. If you're on your feet all the time maybe you have a greater appreciation for them, but I can't really tell the difference, to me they're just shoes.
