I've been there a bunch. It's not that bad as long as you stay in the touristy parts.
But one time my GF and i went down to see the Royals play the Orioles (Ventura and Machado started a brawl). We were trying to find a specific lot that I had a parking pass for and took a wrong turn. We very quickly were in the WRONG part of town.
Another time I went down with a colleague for a conference. We wanted to try out a brewery in a swanky neighborhood, but to get there we passed through a Red Light district. Felt really dangerous to people from small town PA. Again, not that far away from our hotel/convention center.
A friend of mine is a Ravens fan and once parked in a lot where someone was taking money. There was even a cop on the corner watching. When he came out of the game (at 11:30 after a MNF game) his car and everyone else's were gone. They had to call around town to finally find it at an impound lot. He didn't get his vehicle released until 3 AM.
Definitely know where you're going if you go there.
