When the one seed/bye/homefield is determined by a game or two, having those extra pre-programmed games against bad teams is helpful. You don't get it. The AFC West wasn't horrible until we got Mahomes and he literally broke them as they spent, traded and mortgaged their future to have a chance to beat him. The same happened in the East when the Pats had Brady. These teams aren't just bad by happenstance, they are bad because they are chasing a Genie in the Bottle they can never catch.
