Looking back on that game it struck me as to why Kansas City won and how Mahomes changes teams gameplans.
Baltimore all season relied on a strong running game with Lamar making plays built around that. Then they get a lead and their defense does the rest by stopping teams and forcing turnovers.
In the AFCCG they became a pass first team and that is what I call the "Mahomes Effect". What I mean by that is Mahomes is the gold standard for QBs in this league. Lamar might get his second MVP, but questions still swirl around how he's a RB playing QB, he's a horrible passer, and he can't go toe to toe with Mahomes and win in the playoffs.
Because of that it felt like he and Monken devised a passing gameplan to show the doubters wrong, despite the secondary being the strength of this defense. Despite it not working, they double downed on it expecting results to change, sorta like when losing in a casino. Unfortunately it wasn't until the final score that they realized it would not work.
Nothing else makes sense as running is their strength and stopping the run was this defense's weakness. Now granted, I could be way off, but that was something that I was thinking about.
