Rice isn't Tyreek Hill, and the supporting cast isn't even Pringle & Robinson, that's how bad they are.
If we move up and grab a big time receiver, we can have the next 5 years on a rookie deal. Imagine having a Jefferson or Chase level receiver for the next 5 years, without the cap hit. Having Rice, who already looks the part, paired with another big time receiver makes losing Kelce in 2 years easier.
Look how moving up for McDuffie worked out. Imagine that level of excellence, but on the offensive side. Man, Clay said he didn't want Mahomes to get hurt, so draft a tackle, but I bet if you asked Mahomes, he would say get me that stud to throw to.

The only guaranteed "big time" receivers are the top 3 that are well out of the Chiefs reach. The pain of trading up from 32 to the top ~9 to get one of those 3 negates the benefit of the cost control you are getting on that guy pretty significantly.
I would be fine with a small trade up, but outside the top 3 (Harrison, Nabers, Odunze), I just don't think there are any guarantees that the guy is "big time". I am not even convinced a trade up increases the chances of getting an elite guy, this draft has "pro bowler who went at the back of the 2nd round" written all over it.
I also wasn't agreeing with Clay that we should take a tackle instead, I was agreeing with Staylor, you don't want to be locked in on "we have to get X in the first round".
No one is arguing that the offense / receiving core does not need to get better. But a competent veteran and a 2nd round WR would still be a pretty decent leap forward from last years offense, the team does not "need" a Jefferson to continue the current success.
