It is funny how cynical people think people are. Last year's Super Bowl rings did not have to be all about Arrowhead Stadium being the greatest place on Earth.

Somebody with the Royals ownership group needs to interrogate their belief that they have to make money in real estate around a new ballpark in order to survive.

The whole thing flopped because Royals fooled themselves into thinking their survival depended on emulating the Cardinals. That does not make sense and they never explained why they believed that.
Survival? Maybe not. But it's certainly been a national trend for baseball stadiums to try and create entertainment districts around them. With 81 home games per year, it's a lot easier to get businesses to invest around a stadium compared to 8-9 NFL games.

It's worked beautifully for the Rockies - so well, in fact, that the owner has very little incentive to invest in the team because so many people head down to the area just to have a good time, and the game is kind of secondary.
