I don't put him at genius level like many do. I think he just struggled to make a coherent story, often a problem in editing, and people took that to mean it's so deep it takes multiple viewings to understand.
Mulholland Drive was great though. And Twin Peaks was some appointment viewing TV. I can't remember what I had for lunch but I sure remember the Log Lady and that was multiple decades ago.
You hate to lose a true auteur. RIP.
