Yeah, I can't disagree, and as I already stated, Schmidt is far from the best example. But how about one a little more recent involving a Royal: Gil Meche. He isn't remembered by many, but I bet a lot of people remember him for his impromptu retirement with a year left of his contract. He realized he likely was never gonna be the same pitcher again, and rather than **** around and find out, he hung em with some dignity.
