I think a strong majority of pit owners fall into two main groups:
1. People who see the breed being "discriminated against", so they get one to thumb their nose at authority without really thinking about what it means to own one. They snuggle their dogs.
2. People who want to look tough, and they think that having a pit bull accomplishes that. They want their dogs to look aggressive.

That's a good theory though I think you're leaving out one category. People who adopt at a rescue or humane society. Usually, those dogs have had rough lives up to that point. That makes it even harder to control them.
