I'm betting the creature is "mechanical" in nature. If it were a predator, it would have eaten the pilot. That and there was a golden retriever in the bushes watching them walk earlier. I'm guessing it is some "mad scientist's" island or something.

That would be my guess as well...and somehow he made the plane crash and they are all part of his grand experiment...
