They are a lot alike...I think the main difference is a message board is a bunch of people in the room all conversing whereas a blog is more focused with one or few people focusing a discussion and people branching off from what they start. The owner has creatice control whereas here the community has creative control.
This board is also missing some different things that would keep it from really being part of a "blog" community. I guess missing is kind of the wrong term since it is not trying to be a blog.
