Most of the officials in the NFL and college football ranks fill important positions in the workaday world. Officiating is a secondary vocation for them, though it's obviously something they enjoy doing and doing well. If forced to make a choice between officiating and their primary jobs, most would probably choose their primary jobs (e.g. teachers, lawyers, bankers, insurance agents, businessmen, etc.), which is good for us as citizens who depend on having capable folks being productively employed.
I'd rather they keep the current "glorified hobbyist"-type system. I'd rather be pissed off at an official who I know does other worthwhile things in society than one whose only job is to flub calls in a football game. After all, there's always going to be bad calls, might as well have them be made by folks with better things to do!
