You're too young to understand. You'd have to have been going through at least Jr. High in the 80's to really understand the impact of Nirvana in the soundscape.
Some will try to lessen what their impact really was. I find the arguments quite unconvincing. They were the breakthrough band that put the Seattle sound on the map, finally giving the music scene some much needed direction. And the changes were pretty vast... We went from "Girls, Girls, Girls" and "Sweet Cherry Pie" to "Smells Like Teen Spirit." We went from Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Guitar Solo, Screamer's Climax, and Song end, to song structures that weren't so formulaic. The bass guitar became an equal partner to the song, rather than a flat accompaniment. Of course music was naturally moving in this direction, but Nirvana was the breakthrough band. The Doors of our time.
Of course, I'm too young to really appreciate The Doors. So is the nature of life.
