Jesus showed kindness and compassion to the outcasts of society...the prostitutes, the lepers, the beggers, the outsiders (samaritans).
He admonished the clergy for being uncompassionate to those that didn't follow the letter of church doctrine.
It seems that even a couple thousand years isn't enough time for some clergy to change there ways.
