It's pretty clear to me from the description in the original post that it wasn't a hideaway. The "dark particulate" was resin, the black residue left behind when you burn marijuana.

Could've been hashish as well. Also, the water was described as "clear", which bong water isn't if it's been used. That pic is linked to the Miami Herald so I assumed it was of the actual bottle in question. Maybe it's not.
