From the Globe's apology/CYA:
"Borges declined to comment, but his union representative issued a statement saying: 'The Boston Newspaper Guild stands behind Ron and the high-quality work he has done for the Globe over the years. We will work on his behalf to see that justice is served in this matter.'"
As a newspaper veteran, I translate the Globe's statement this way:
Good grief.
What an embarrassment this assclown is, but here's our problem: Over the years, he's won the kind of awards that we like to use to help sell newspapers. We've warned him that from this point on he'll be required to rephrase real reporters' work before he'll be allowed to pass it off as his own. We've assigned a copy editor to rewrite what Mr. Borges is too drunk, lazy, or stupid to rewrite himself. That should be enough to keep our asses out of the wringer, while allowing our own no-talent and/or too drunk and/or too lazy and/or too stupid award-winning columnist to return to the Globe and win even more undeserved awards.
