Most often it is loud music, but it can even come and go with soft noise, even my own voice. High pitches are the worst [my SACD of Blonde on Blonde, with all the harmonica, can be excruciating]
It's not that I can't hear, or that the sound is distorted, but the sound is filtered, seemingly before my receptors receives it, through a paper bag or some sort that creates a rustling overlay, like is I were listening to something in a gale force wind.
I have some hypotheses about ear wax, but haven't found a correlation I can announce with confidence.

That's otitis. I've had that before. I went to a Doc and he said I can give you prednisone or you can wait 12 weeks and it will go away. Mine was caused by a eustachian (sp?) tube that wasn't draining the way it should.
