I always suspected DT was the hardest position to play physically and emotionally. You're facing the heart of the OL, you usually don't get to even sniff the QB on passing downs, and you're usually being double-teamed on rushing downs. You don't really go anywhere on the football field other than that 20'-by-20' box, and you can be a good player on a football field and never have the stats to reflect it.
I think that opinion's been solidified as I see a very high percentage of DTs with character issues.
