They use a drive pully like the riders for the self-propel. Plus they are rear wheel drive. The self propel seems to be just about bullet-proof.
(I believe most of the older snappers had the Techumse engines which most people hate, my old one has a Wisconsin Robin. The newer ones have briggs or hondas - much better than the Techumses)

Briggs just needs to fix their carburetor design. My Tecumseh has completely outperformed the B&S completely.
