I haven't paid all of my deposits through college (two times) and another one at the last place I stayed at. They always screw us out of the entire deposit and then make a bunch of shit up that we did. I've never paid anybody, nobody calls me, and to this day I have excellent credit. The fabricated damages that my roommates and I owe are probably about $1,200 total. But then again, maybe I'm just really lucky and the landlord just said ahh f-it. And of course you aren't talking about an extra $300 on top of your lost deposit here. So far so good for me though.
I was going to get married to get out of a housing contract one time, because I was bound by two contracts for the same term. Sometimes theres a loophole in leases regarding marriage..maybe you could forge a marriage license eh?
